When the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad built the Thomas Viaduct over Maryland’s Papatsco River in 1835, it was the largest railroad bridge in the USA and the country’s first multi-span railroad bridge built on a curve. It remains the world’s oldest multiple span stone railroad bridge. The bridge still carries heavy CSX traffic today. It lies at Relay/St. Denis which was the midpoint of America’s oldest railroad line. Relay got its name as the place where the original horse-drawn railroad stopped to change horses between Baltimore and Ellicott City. I took these photos in December 2019.
