Mugatu

EXTRA

During some recent social-distancing recreation (riding around alone), I spotted this odd vessel in a local boatyard. I have no idea how it got to Washington NC, but I was able to find a little of its history. Mugatu is a two-crew ocean-going row boat (R15 design) built in 2016 by UK company Rannoch Adventures. Ryan Foss & Erin Hammer entered the 23-foot, carbon fiber rowboat in the 2016 Great Pacific Race. It was a 3,000-mile pull from Monterey CA to Waikiki, HI. Their goal was to complete the row in 44 days and make the Guinness Book of World Records. Alas, not many days into the race, an early morning wave hit them rolling Mugatu. As designed, the boat popped back upright, but Hammers wrist was badly broken in the accident. The race was over for Mugatu, Foss and Hammer. The boat is now trailered, catching rain water in a shady corner of a boatyard on the swamps of the opposite coast.
