In 2015, Norfolk Southern began updating 124 of their Dash-9 piglets to more powerful, efficient machines. They took 1995 GE D9-40Cs, updated the engines, cabs, and technology and dubbed them AC44C6M. It weighs in at a dainty 432,000 pounds. The first six got special paint jobs affectionately know as Sonics after their Sonic the Hedgehog resemblance. 4003 was built in NS’s Roanoke Locomotive Shops.
